Offering the Bread of Life

As we move through Holy Week, we find ourselves today, on Maundy Thursday, at the Table. Jesus gathered with his disciples, his closest friends, to share a meal before the betrayal, suffering, and resurrection to follow. He recognized the significance of the meal. He gathered to bless and break the bread, to bless and pour out the wine. He gathered to offer us the Bread of Life. He gathered to invite us to the table.

Faithful God, Jesus gave us the gift of his own Body and Blood that we might have food to sustain us. As we share the Eucharist of Jesus Christ, let us become eucharist to one another. May our lives be blessed, broken and given that your people may live. This we ask in the name of Jesus, our living Bread. Amen.

(Prayer from the Sisters of Mercy)

In the United States, 14.5 percent of households struggle to put food on the table.

How do we respond with the Bread of Life for those who don't have a place at the table?

"The documentary A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides — as they have in the past — that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all."

Scripture: Matthew 26:26-28 (NLT)

As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.
